Introduction

Ophthalmology is one of the important allied surgical specialty subjects in the MBBS curriculum. As a General Physician or Specialist in any branch of medicine one may come across certain eye problems/diseases. A good understanding of common ocular problems & those associated with certain systemic disorders is required at undergraduate level. Ophthalmology is comparatively difficult subject at under graduate level and is taught in 3rd. & 4th year, MBBS. Although clinical orientation is started from the very first day with names and terminologies being used in basic subjects and the correlations of all the basic subjects with Ophthalmology, specially Physiology, Pathology, Pharmacology and Community Medicine. Main teaching of the subject is covered in 4th year MBBS, when lectures and clinical classes in ophthalmology are started, and students start seeing real patients in Gulab Devi teaching hospital during their clinical rotations. Full emphasis on teaching is in fourth year as s this is the year when students have to appear for their final ophthalmology exit exam. No student can grasp sufficient understanding and knowledge on the subject, unless he /she start learning it from the beginning. The course of ophthalmology is designed to match the importance it has, at under graduate level, to make them able to identify , diagnose & empirically manage common ocular problems & diagnose & refer certain grave ophthalmic situations to appropriate tertiary ophthalmic center for further management.

Our department comprises of a complete general ophthalmology OPD where all patients can be screened, evaluated and directed to necessary treatment. The operation room can accommodate for a variety of procedures including cataract surgeries, lid surgeries, glaucoma surgeries and scleroses buckling.
